Millions of users, thousands of new tweets every day, hundreds of headlines — well that's how OpenAI’s ChatGPT is trending over the internet today. News sites are flooded with thousands of stories about the revolutionary chatbot making lives easier. But, is ChatGPT going to totally change the way people use the internet forever? Is it a threat to Google? Well, answering such questions without considering every aspect of the story would not be justifiable.

ChatGPT vs Google

  • Google is the world’s most popular internet search engine. Additionally, it has its own conversational AI technology, such as Google Assistant.

  • ChatGPT reached a milestone of a million signups within a week of its launch.

  • Google is good at helping searchers find correct information on the internet from billions of websites with its ever-evolving algorithms.

  • OpenAI’s ChatGPT is a conversation platform that answers queries and provides responses just like a human being.

  • Currently, the research preview version of ChatGPT is open to use and is trained using only 570 GB of data.

Basic Difference Between Google and ChatGPT
In simple terms, ChatGPT (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer) is an AI chatbot that interacts in a conversational manner — just like a real human. It is based on the GPT-3.5 large language model, which uses natural language processing and is trained using human feedback. It has analyzed over 570 gigabytes of textual data and has been trained to predict the next word in a series of words or sentences.

On the other side, Google is a leading internet search engine with a hefty market share. 9 out of 10 internet users prefer Google for finding websites and information on the internet. It is owned by Google LLC which is a subsidiary company of Alphabet Inc.

In 2021, the company also introduced Google LaMDA, their breakthrough conversation technology, and calls themselves an ‘AI-first’ company. Google is also expected to triple down on AI and NLP in the upcoming years.

ChatGPT

Google

ChatGPT is an AI-powered dialogue-based chatbot developed by OpenAI. It is a fine-tuned version of GPT-3.5 large language model.

Google is an internet search engine, which is owned by Google LLC.

It is good at understanding prompts  and providing responses using natural language processing.

It excels at helping users find helpful information and websites on the internet.

Currently, the research preview (prototype) of ChatGPT is available for free now. We can expect a pro version of ChatGPT soon.

Google’s search engine is totally free to use for everyone.

The prototype of ChatGPT is based on only 570 gigabytes of textual data.

Google index contains over hundreds of billions of web pages amounting to over 1,00,000,000 gigabytes of data.

The prototype of ChatGPT has limited knowledge of the world’s events only up to September 2021.

Leading search engine Google keeps its index afresh to pace up with the latest events and happenings around the world.

Although having limited knowledge, ChatGPT is insanely good at understanding the user’s prompts and generating responses and solutions through NLP.

Google relies on the available data in its index to answer the user’s queries and searches.

The dialogue-based conversations on ChatGPT do not provide any details about the sources of information, which may put a question mark on its reliability.

Being an internet search engine, Google offers multiple options to choose from for the search results, and also provides a complete source of information on the result pages.

As of now, ChatGPT only offers textual answers to queries.

Google offers results in the most-suitable form — text, images, videos, QnA, products, etc.

Will ChatGPT replace Google?
Microsoft, holding a major stake in OpenAI, is also planning to use ChatGPT to empower Bing, its search engine. This combination of a cutting-edge large learning model with a powerful search engine like Bing can prove to be dreadful for Google. Thus, we can expect ChatGPT + Bing to be a threat to Google.

Will ChatGPT be a replacement for Google or not — is still a matter of debate. But, believe me — things are surely going to change for good! 😀

& that’s a wrap for ChatGPT vs Google.
