Albanian girls in sports
In life full of pace and momentum, practising sports at a professional level, for health or just as a hobby, is becoming an increasingly popular phenomenon. In Albania, the conditions for the development of sports are not at all suitable and good, despite this, Albania has managed to highlight very good sportswomen. Let’s share a few of them which make us proud:
LUISA GEGA
Luzia Gega is crowned European champion in athletics after winning gold medal in the 3000 metre steeplechase competition at the European Championships in Munich. The Albanian athlete crossed the finish line first with a time of 9.11.31 seconds, breaking the record of 9:17.57 previously held by Russia’s Yuliya Zaripova back in 2010. Gega controlled most of the race, leading for the whole 2900 metres, and she finished with a nearly 4-second edge over the German Lea Meyer.Gega has won a number of medals, including Mediterranean Games, Balkan competitions, runner-up of Europe, etc.
KLEANA SHUQJA
Kleana Shuqja was the only chess player who represented Albania in the world chess championship held in Batumi, Georgia. From the 19th to the 30th of October, Kleana played against the best players in the world in the under-10 age group for girls. In 11 games, Kleana managed to collect 5.5 points (4 wins, 2 draws and 5 losses) and was ranked 52nd at the end of the championship out of 112 participating players from all over the world. Although for Kleana and her coach this is a championship with not good results, comparing it with other sports championships where Albania is represented, we must say that it is a positive result. For the 16-year-old, 2022 is the most successful year with 3 consecutive victories, making it possible for the cups not only to belong to Kleana, but also for the name of Albania to be exalted in the international arena.
